Tricks or funny things:

Red is incredibly obedient and teachable. You can tell Red to STAY, COME TO ME, GO BACK, WALK THEM UP, PUSH THEM UP etc….

Red is also incredibly vocal on command. Red likes to sing when we scratch his right ear, when its meal time, when he’s asked a question, when he’s let out of his kennel in the morning, when Mick & Chris return from holiday. Nearly everyday at 5pm (dinner time) Red will start nudging and talking to his owner to tell them it is time that dinner is served.

Red has a good sense for alarm, he will bark when there is a snake or something not natural to his environment.

How Red lost his leg:

We picked Red up from a cattle feedlot when he was only 10 weeks old. After the first 2 months on the farm he had become quite confident traveling on the ATV’s and Ute’s(Pick-ups). But Red was still young and had much more to learn about farm life…

One evening we were on our way back to the house with Red in the back of the Ute, when a Wallaby hopped across in front of us. Red jumped out of the back to take pursuit. He traveled only a couple of metres and sat down in the long grass. Something was very wrong…

He must have landed very badly. When we got out to pick Red up we discovered that he had a very severely broken back leg. He was extremely brave and he didn’t even cry when we put him back in the vehicle and he remained silent on a rough one hour ride to our “local” vet.

After an examination, the vet needed to take x-ray’s and commented that even though the fractured bone had broken through the skin, she was hopeful that the leg could be repaired. She told us to go home and come back the next day and pick him up. Later that evening we received a call from the vet, she told us that unfortunately the fractured bone had severed the tendons and that the only real solution was to amputate the leg. We were devastated.

However, the next day when we picked up Red, all he appeared to be concerned about was the damn annoying funnel around his neck. To this day (apart from trying to pee right legged, and scratch his right ear) the missing limb has not impeded his lifestyle one bit.

Why Red should be Scrap:

Red is an enthusiastic learner who possesses natural intuition. He is a working dog who is bred from a long line of working dogs. At 10 weeks old, Red displayed his willingness to work only days after arrival on our farm. Red’s training commenced within the first week he was here.

He is what some would call a ‘soft dog’ as he is not aggressive; he had on one occasion located and protected an abandoned newborn calf, however he is not afraid to stand his ground to maintain control with the cattle.

I (Mick) have found him to be generally easy to train as he is eager to please. He has never shown any hostility to humans, quite the opposite; he is always keen for a pat and some attention. Red can be commanded by most people even our 4 year old grandson, though he is a bit cunning and will try to put it over you if you don’t show authority.

Red loves to be doing things, and being around people and other animals. Apart from working with cattle he enjoys a splash in the dams, playing cricket with the grand kids and throwing his soft doggy toys about.

Red is a true ambassador for working dogs, especially as it is normal practice for working dogs to be put down if they become disabled. Red has gone against the norm, showing that even though he has lost a limb he is still quite capable of performing regular farm duties. He proves that dogs with 3 legs are just as talented as those with four!
